Local tips

A roundabout only about 130 m away sets the tone at the Smithers Service BC Centre, 1020 Murray Street. As you enter, yield to traffic already circling, keep a steady speed and signal right before your exit. The centre is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. Railway tracks are also close: map data shows six level crossings about 240 to 330 m away. Slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. Muheim Elementary School is about 470 m away, with St. Joseph's Catholic School about 685 m away. ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail, so watch for school zone signs on weekdays. There are 71 marked crosswalks nearby, so keep scanning for pedestrians. Our 10.4 km practice route heads northeast on Murray Street, takes Alfred Avenue, King Street and Main Street to Victoria Drive and Frontage Road, continues via Pacific Street, Broadway Avenue and Toronto Street to Bulkley Drive, and finishes through the roundabout on Alfred Avenue. Drive it a few times to get used to that roundabout.

Common questions

Smithers road test FAQ

What are the hours at Smithers?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
