Local tips

In Burns Lake, ICBC services are handled by AMC Village Insurance Services (2019) Ltd. at 330 Hwy 16, open Monday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Road tests are by appointment. The Yellowhead Highway runs about 30 m from the office and is posted at 50 km/h here, so leaving the office means judging gaps in through traffic carefully. A railway level crossing lies about 170 m away: slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. The Burns Lake Fire Department is about 410 m from the office and the Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre about 875 m, so be ready to pull over for emergency vehicles. Map data shows six sets of traffic lights within a kilometre, the nearest about 295 m away. Our 7.3 km practice route is short but packed with turns: after the Yellowhead Highway it winds through Center Street, 1st Avenue, 3rd Avenue, Kerr Street and 5th Avenue before looping back. That makes it ideal for practicing shoulder checks, clear signals and full stops at one intersection after another.

Common questions

Burns Lake road test FAQ

What are the hours at Burns Lake?

ICBC lists: Mon–Sat 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
