Local tips

Houston's licensing agent is Western Financial Group (Network) Inc. at 3232 Hwy. 16 W., open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; road tests are by appointment. A railway level crossing about 165 m from the office is the first thing to plan for. Slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. The Houston Volunteer Fire Department is about 190 m away, so pull over if you hear a siren. The Yellowhead Highway (YH 16) passes about 30 m from the office, posted at 50 km/h, and map data shows a bridge on it about 245 m away. Silverthorne Elementary School is about 355 m away; watch for students and school zones on weekdays, since ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail. Our 7.3 km practice route stays on town streets, using 12th Street, Copeland Avenue, 11th Street, Avalon Avenue, Star Street and Dominion Avenue before East Valley Road. With few traffic lights nearby, practice working out who has the right of way at each intersection.

Common questions

Houston road test FAQ

What are the hours at Houston?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; Sat 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
