Local tips

Schools are the main thing to watch around Hub International Insurance Brokers (HCW), the ICBC licensing agent at 470 Stuart Drive in Fort St. James. Map data shows a school about 395 m away, David Hoy Elementary School about 405 m away and Fort St. James Secondary School about 660 m away. ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail, so slow down for school zones on weekdays. The office is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. A fire station is about 170 m away, so be prepared to pull over for emergency vehicles. You'll also find bridges on Stuart Drive West about 175 m away and on Douglas Avenue (BC 27) about 525 m away. Our 7.3 km practice route starts on Manson Street, takes Douglas Avenue and Elm Street West, follows Stuart Drive West and East, then winds through Kwah Road East, Greenview Drive and two short courts before returning on the Stuart Lake Highway (BC 27). Use the courts to practice slow, controlled turns and the sharp right on Greenview Drive.

Common questions

Fort St. James road test FAQ

What are the hours at Fort St. James?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
