Local tips

Vancouver Driver Licensing on Commercial Drive, at 2750 Commercial Drive, is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except Wednesdays, when it opens at 9:00 a.m. There are no Saturday hours, and road tests are by appointment. Map data counts 96 sets of traffic lights within a kilometre, with the nearest only about 35 m from the door, plus 398 stop signs in the surrounding streets. Roundabouts about 285 m and 455 m away mean you should yield to traffic already circling and signal your exit. East Broadway (BC 7), seven lanes wide, is about 255 m away, so practice picking your lane early. A child-care centre, CEFA Early Learning, is about 215 m away and Stratford Hall about 330 m, so watch for children and school zones on weekdays. A railway level crossing about 410 m away calls for slowing down and never stopping on the tracks. Our 13.8 km practice route follows Commercial Drive and East 12th Avenue to the Grandview Highway, then Rupert Street, East Broadway, Nanaimo Street and Powell Street. Treat it as practice for left turns across several lanes of oncoming traffic.

Common questions

Commercial Drive road test FAQ

What are the hours at Commercial Drive?

ICBC lists: Mon–Tue 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Wed 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Thu–Fri 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
