Local tips

Underwriters Insurance Brokers (Penticton) Ltd., doing business as Johnson Meier Insurance Agencies Group, is the licensing agent at 1222 Fifth Ave. in Valemount. It is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. Valemount Fire Rescue is about 320 m from the office; be ready to pull over for emergency vehicles. A school about 475 m away and Valemount Secondary School about 755 m out mean watching for students and school zones on weekdays, and ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail. Railway level crossings are about 545 m and 575 m from the office: slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. The nearest traffic lights are about 950 m away, so close to the office you will be dealing with stop signs and uncontrolled intersections. Our 12.3 km practice route uses Cedar Street, 5th Avenue, Main Street and Cedarside Road, then the Slocan Group Sawmill Access Road and the Southern Yellowhead Highway (YH 5). On the highway, practice holding your speed and checking mirrors often.

Common questions

Valemount road test FAQ

What are the hours at Valemount?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
