Local tips

In Parksville, Coastal Community Insurance Services Ltd. books road tests at unit 100, 126 Alberni Highway. It's open Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. The Island Highway (BC 19A) runs about 100 m from the office, posted at 50 km/h, and the nearest of 12 sets of traffic lights within a kilometre is about the same distance away. Jensen Avenue West, Alberni Highway and McMillan Street are also posted at 50 km/h. The Parksville Volunteer Fire Department is about 275 m away, so be ready to pull over for emergency vehicles. Our 16.1 km practice route is unusual because it includes highway driving: after Hirst Avenue West, James Street, Moilliet Street South and Despard Avenue West, it takes the 19 South ramp toward Nanaimo, then exit 46 onto 19A, before returning on the East Island Highway, Shelly Road and Jensen Avenue East. On the ramp, match the speed of traffic, signal, check your blind spot and merge into a safe gap.

Common questions

Parksville road test FAQ

What are the hours at Parksville?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; Sat 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
