Common questions
The Banff Registry road test FAQ
What are the hours at The Banff Registry?
Alberta doesn't publish hours for each registry, and they vary. Call The Banff Registry at 403-762-2177 to confirm before you go. Road tests are by appointment.
How do I book a road test?
Book online through The Banff Registry's road test booking page (the "Official booking" button on this page, also listed on alberta.ca), or in person at the registry. You'll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence, and any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid first. Registry agents set their own road test fees, up to the maximum in the province's Registry Agent Product Catalogue, so confirm the fee when you book.
What do I need for the road test?
A vehicle that meets all legal and safety requirements, plus the documents listed on the registry's road test information sheet and in your confirmation letter. The information sheet also covers eligibility, fees, and the registry's cancellation and no-show policies.
How long do I need my learner's licence first, and how is the test marked?
You must have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least one year and be at least 16 (with a parent's or guardian's written consent if you're under 18). You fail the Class 5 road test with more than 75 points, or automatically if you endanger someone, drive unsafely or break traffic laws. After you pass the road test and a vision test, you get a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, which you hold for at least two years.
Is a practice route available for The Banff Registry?
Yes. This page has a 21.9 km Class 5 practice test route that starts and ends at the centre, with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
