Local tips
High Prairie Registry is at 5207 49 St, only about 70 metres from 53 Avenue, which carries Highway 2 through town at 50 km/h. Because the registry's hours vary, call 780-523-5500 to confirm them before you head over; road tests are by appointment. There are just two sets of traffic lights within a kilometre, the nearest about 185 metres away. A fire station is about 225 metres away, so if you see emergency lights, signal and pull over. Map data also shows a railway level crossing about 295 metres from the registry and another about 1.4 km away. Slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. St. Andrew’s School is about 500 metres away and High Prairie Elementary School about 640 metres away, so watch for students on weekdays. Our 35.1 km practice route heads east on 53 Avenue (Highway 2), turns onto 48 Street (Highway 749), and loops via Township Road 750, Range Road 164, Township Road 744 and Pleasantview Drive. Practice checking your mirrors and slowing well before each rural turn.
Common questions
High Prairie Registry road test FAQ
What are the hours at High Prairie Registry?
Alberta doesn't publish hours for each registry, and they vary. Call High Prairie Registry at 780-523-5500 to confirm before you go. Road tests are by appointment.
How do I book a road test?
Book online through High Prairie Registry's road test booking page (the "Official booking" button on this page, also listed on alberta.ca), or in person at the registry. You'll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence, and any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid first. Registry agents set their own road test fees, up to the maximum in the province's Registry Agent Product Catalogue, so confirm the fee when you book.
What do I need for the road test?
A vehicle that meets all legal and safety requirements, plus the documents listed on the registry's road test information sheet and in your confirmation letter. The information sheet also covers eligibility, fees, and the registry's cancellation and no-show policies.
How long do I need my learner's licence first, and how is the test marked?
You must have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least one year and be at least 16 (with a parent's or guardian's written consent if you're under 18). You fail the Class 5 road test with more than 75 points, or automatically if you endanger someone, drive unsafely or break traffic laws. After you pass the road test and a vision test, you get a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, which you hold for at least two years.
Is a practice route available for High Prairie Registry?
Yes. This page has a 35.1 km Class 5 practice test route that starts and ends at the centre, with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
