Local tips
Right outside the Trail Service BC Centre at 1520 Bay Avenue, map data shows a traffic light only about 15 m away, so be ready to check the signal the moment you leave. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. Pedestrians matter here: there are 136 marked crosswalks and 73 stop signs in the surrounding streets. The Victoria Street Bridge, part of BC 3B, is about 195 m away; keep to your lane and avoid changing lanes on the bridge. Victoria Street is posted at 60 km/h, and Highway 22, about 565 m out, at 90 km/h. Railway level crossings start about 620 m from the office: slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. Kootenay Boundary Fire Hall 374 is about 685 m away and Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital about 910 m, so pull over for emergency vehicles. Our 10.3 km practice route uses Helena Street and Bay Avenue, follows Victoria Street (BC 3B), then uses Carnation Drive, Rosewood Drive and McQuarrie Street before returning on Bailey Street.
Common questions
Trail road test FAQ
What are the hours at Trail?
ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.
How do I book a road test?
Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.
What do I need to bring?
Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.
When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?
New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
Is a practice route available for Trail?
