Local tips

Few test centres have a railway this close: map data shows a level crossing about 25 m from ICBC's Duncan location at 5785 Duncan Street, with more about 295 to 305 m away. Every time you cross, slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. The office is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. The Duncan Volunteer Fire Department is about 85 m away, so be ready to pull over to the right for emergency vehicles. Government Street, about 295 m away, is posted at just 30 km/h, and Cowichan Secondary School is about 465 m from the office, so keep your speed down. Map data counts four roundabouts nearby, the nearest about 480 m away. Our 12.6 km practice route uses James Street, Duncan Street and Beverly Street to reach the Trans-Canada Highway and the Cowichan Valley Highway (BC 18), then goes through three roundabouts on Somenos Road, Cowichan Lake Road and Gibbins Road before returning on Government Street. In each roundabout, yield to traffic already in it and signal your exit.

Common questions

Duncan road test FAQ

What are the hours at Duncan?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
