Local tips
Ponoka License & Registry is in Suite 1 at 4902 50 St, about 35 m from 50 Street itself, and the first traffic light is only about 90 m away. Map data shows four sets of lights within a kilometre and 32 marked crosswalks, so approach each corner at a speed that lets you stop for a pedestrian. A railway level crossing is about 380 m from the registry, and a group of crossings lies about 945 m away: slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. The Brick Learning Centre is about 575 m away and Ponoka Elementary School about 675 m away, so watch for students on weekdays. Road tests are by appointment; hours vary, so call 403-783-5525 to confirm before your test. Our 57.5 km practice route goes east on 49 Avenue to 50 Street, then onto Highway 53 and Highway 2A, along Matejka Road and Range Road 255, and back via 39 Avenue and Township Road 432. It's a good route for practicing the change from highway speeds back to town streets, rechecking your speedometer each time the limit drops.
Common questions
Ponoka License & Registry road test FAQ
What are the hours at Ponoka License & Registry?
Alberta doesn't publish hours for each registry, and they vary. Call Ponoka License & Registry at 403-783-5525 to confirm before you go. Road tests are by appointment.
How do I book a road test?
Book online through Ponoka License & Registry's road test booking page (the "Official booking" button on this page, also listed on alberta.ca), or in person at the registry. You'll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence, and any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid first. Registry agents set their own road test fees, up to the maximum in the province's Registry Agent Product Catalogue, so confirm the fee when you book.
What do I need for the road test?
A vehicle that meets all legal and safety requirements, plus the documents listed on the registry's road test information sheet and in your confirmation letter. The information sheet also covers eligibility, fees, and the registry's cancellation and no-show policies.
How long do I need my learner's licence first, and how is the test marked?
You must have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least one year and be at least 16 (with a parent's or guardian's written consent if you're under 18). You fail the Class 5 road test with more than 75 points, or automatically if you endanger someone, drive unsafely or break traffic laws. After you pass the road test and a vision test, you get a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, which you hold for at least two years.
Is a practice route available for Ponoka License & Registry?
Yes. This page has a 57.5 km Class 5 practice test route that starts and ends at the centre, with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
